Description

Built for overlanders who camp often, drive far, and expect their gear to last.

  • 4.8" closed height — nearly 3" lower than the EdgeRoof, for a quieter ride on the highway
  • 660 lb rated floor — built to carry real overlanding gear, not just a sleeping bag
  • Made for regular campers — designed for people who live on the road, not just a once-a-year trip

Overview

Rugged, versatile aluminum shell. Built from durable aluminum, this hard-shell rooftop tent stands up to the elements while staying versatile enough to carry storage boxes, solar panels, or other gear on top. Whether it's mounted on an SUV, a pickup, or a Jeep, it's a dependable choice for the trail.

Comfort wherever you camp. A 2-inch memory foam mattress topped with a 0.4-inch cooling gel layer delivers thick, breathable comfort year-round, turning the tent into a real bedroom on wheels.

Advanced UV protection. The 280g ripstop polyester fabric, paired with a full blackout coating, protects against moisture and hidden UV damage, built for campers who expect their gear to hold up over the long haul.

Built-in crossbars and mounts. Two crossbars and four mounting brackets come standard, so you can attach extra gear without additional accessories, while keeping the setup stable.

360° ventilation. Every window features a double layer (mesh + outer panel) for airflow on all four sides, keeping you comfortable even in hot weather.

Four-season climate port. A dedicated port lets you run a portable AC hose in summer or a diesel heater duct in winter. External zippers and internal anchor points keep the hose securely in place.

Carbon steel X-hinge. The X-hinge design maximizes interior space, opens smoothly, and stays stable in use, rugged without sacrificing comfort.

FAQs

What is an aluminum hard shell roof top tent?

An aluminum hard-shell rooftop tent is a durable, lightweight camping solution that attaches to your vehicle's roof rack. OPENROAD's aluminum hard-shell tents come with fast setup, all-weather resistance, and elevated sleeping spaces. Perfect for off-road adventures and overlanding, they keep you protected from rain, debris, and wildlife while being way more comfortable than ground tents.

What makes the best hard shell roof top tent?

The best hard-shell rooftop tent combines a tough aluminum build, weatherproof fabrics, and hassle-free setup. OPENROAD tents offer outstanding stability, long-lasting durability, and great comfort for off-road and overlanding trips. Built-in perks like integrated mattresses, ventilation, and compact foldable designs make them perfect for both short getaways and extended adventures.

How does a hard shell car roof tent differ from a soft shell tent?

A hard-shell car rooftop tent has a rigid aluminum shell, letting you set it up fast while getting top-notch protection and long-lasting durability. Unlike soft-shell tents, OPENROAD's hard-shell options hold their own against harsh weather, have better insulation, and don't take much time to set up — all to give you a safer, more comfortable elevated sleeping space for off-road camping.

Where can I find a hard shell roof top tent for sale?

Top-quality hard-shell rooftop tents are easy to find at reliable retailers or online stores. OPENROAD's aluminum hard-shell tents are available with detailed product info, compatibility guides, and direct purchase options — genuine products and dedicated support for all your off-road adventures.

What is a hard top roof top tent, and is it good for off-roading?

A hard-top rooftop tent has a solid shell that blocks bad weather, debris, and wildlife. OPENROAD hard-top tents are a perfect fit for off-roading — they set up quickly, stand the test of time, and provide an elevated sleeping area. Made rugged with a compact, foldable design, they're great for Jeep, SUV, or truck adventures, keeping you comfortable and safe even on rough terrains.

Can I use an OPENROAD Jeep tent on other vehicles?

Lots of OPENROAD Jeep tents work with other SUVs, trucks, and off-road rigs too. They come with adjustable mounting brackets and fit most universal roof racks. Make sure to check weight limits and your vehicle's roof specs before installation to keep things safe. This flexibility lets adventure-seeking campers get a tough, reliable elevated sleeping space on whatever vehicle they're using.

Are hard shell roof top tents worth the extra money?

Yes. OPENROAD hard shell roof top tents offer faster setup, greater durability, and enhanced weather protection, making them an excellent investment for frequent campers.

Hard shell vs soft shell roof top tent: what's the difference?

FAQ
Hard shell or soft shell — which is better?

Hard shell rooftop tents hold up better against the elements than soft shell models. The rigid structure gives you stronger insulation and weather protection, and they open and close faster, usually in under a minute. They're also more durable over time since the hard outer shell shields the fabric underneath from wear.

Which model sells best?

Between the two hard shell versions, the lightweight model is the top seller. It keeps the durability and quick setup of a hard shell tent while shaving off weight, making it a favorite for people who want an easy, dependable setup for their trips.

How much weight can the tent hold?

The tent itself is rated for 660 lbs, and the ladder for 330 lbs. In practice, your roof rack or crossbars are usually the limiting factor, so check their rating too.

My tent arrived damaged — what do I do?

Inspect the tent as soon as it arrives and photograph any scratches, dents, or punctures. Note the damage on the delivery receipt, even if it looks minor. Send us photos of both the packaging and the product, along with your delivery details, within 48 hours of receiving it, and we'll take it from there.

Do I need to heat the tent in winter?

For colder climates, we recommend adding an insulated cover, which we offer as a matching accessory. The tent also has a built-in diesel heater channel, so you can run a heater to keep things warm inside.

Can I leave bedding inside when it's closed?

Since the tent folds down, there isn't room to store bedding inside when it's closed. A self-inflating mattress and pillow are available separately, which you can inflate and place inside once you set up.

How do I prevent condensation?

Crack the windows open, ideally the higher ones, to keep air moving through the tent. Facing the tent into the wind when you camp helps too. If condensation keeps being an issue, a small rechargeable fan can help move air around.

I woke up and the inside is damp — now what?

Keep a small towel on hand to wipe down the walls, ceiling, and floor. Air the tent out before heading off if you can, and take any damp bedding or gear out rather than packing it away wet.

What if I find mold in the tent?

A diluted bleach solution with gentle wiping usually clears it up. If you'd rather avoid bleach, white vinegar or a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution both work well as natural alternatives.

Will it fit in my garage?

Add up the height of your vehicle, roof rack, and the tent itself before you buy. The lightweight model closes at 4.8", while the heavy-duty version closes at 7".

Will it fit my vehicle?

Fit depends on your specific roof rack and vehicle, so we can't guarantee compatibility across the board. The key number is your roof's dynamic weight rating: you'll need at least 165 lbs for the lightweight model or 210 lbs for the standard version. That figure is usually in your owner's manual, or you can check with your vehicle's manufacturer.

How do I keep the tent secure?

Camp on flat, stable ground away from steep drops or water. Use a safety lock on the tent to prevent theft or accidental opening, and it's worth knowing your exits and having basic emergency supplies on hand, just in case.

Any tips for the ladder?

Make sure every rung is fully extended and locked before use. To shorten it, fold the top rung only, never the lower ones, and check there's no bounce in it. Any give in the ladder means it isn't fully locked from top to bottom.
